Transhumance Under Scrutiny
By Fernando CANCIO | LNC
(Bangui, October 24, 2026 | LAMINE MÉDIA) As long as there is an insistence on following ancestral practices—rejecting the European model of keeping livestock in enclosed spaces and instead maintaining the tradition of transhumance—people will continue to die. Despite the efforts of various parties, lives have been lost and individuals injured in the Central African Republic. During the 2025–2026 season, at least 131 incidents were recorded, resulting in 35 deaths and 32 injuries—a toll that could have been even higher were it not for the intervention of MINUSCA.
These incidents primarily involve the destruction of crops, livestock theft, conflicts over access to natural resources and migratory corridors, and the involvement of armed actors in certain localities. This fuels tensions between herders and farmers, notwithstanding the numerous awareness campaigns conducted by international organizations.
In response to these challenges, MINUSCA—supported by the Central African government and its partners—continues its efforts to foster a more inclusive, collaborative, and peaceful approach to managing transhumance.
Against this backdrop, a meeting was held in Berberati last week to evaluate the 2025–2026 season and prepare for the 2026–2027 season, with the aim of preventing conflicts related to the movement of livestock.
Nevertheless, on the ground, there is still a long way to go before peaceful coexistence between herders and farmers can be achieved.
