Touadéra to Go to Moscow
By Isabella Luisa CAPELLI | LAMINE MEDIA
(Bangui, May 18, 2026 – LNC) Moscow is putting immense pressure on Touadéra to replace Wagner mercenaries with the Africa Corps, troops under the Russian Ministry of Defense. The problem is, they will need to be paid, while the Wagner Group profits from exploiting Central African resources. Bangui doesn't have the money and has been stalling ever since. Rumor has it that Touadéra might try to curry favor with the United Arab Emirates to obtain this money in exchange for support for a faction at war in Sudan. Meanwhile, he is expected in Moscow from May 26 to 28 to participate in the first edition of the International Security Forum, organized by Sergei Shoigu, the former Russian Minister of Defense who has become one of the Kremlin's key interlocutors on African security issues. Presented by Russian authorities as a new platform for discussions on international security issues, this forum is expected to bring together several political, military, and security officials from countries allied with or partnered by Moscow, such as Mali and Burkina Faso. The Kremlin intends to use this event as a showcase for its security cooperation with African and Asian states, in a context of prolonged confrontation with Western powers. Weary of the ongoing conflict, Touadéra will attend, even though he knows that sooner or later, the issue of replacing the Wagner Group will arise. It is worth noting that this trip to Moscow comes less than three months after his tense meeting with Vladimir Putin regarding his most sensitive issue: the deployment of Africa Corps.
