The remaining elections have been cancelled

(Bangui, 26 October 2026 | LAMINE MÉDIA) It’s almost laughable, the whole thing has become so ridiculous: originally scheduled for 27 September by presidential decree, these by-elections were cancelled at the last minute.
The main reasons for the deadlock
• Severe budgetary constraints: The National Electoral Authority (ANE) issued an official statement announcing the postponement due to a critical lack of funding. As the budget required to ensure the smooth running of the polls had not been released by the State, the institution was unable to honour its commitments to service providers, particularly regarding the ordering and printing of ballot papers.
• A build-up of financial delays: This deadlock comes against a backdrop of already tense social conditions within the electoral body itself. A few months earlier, the overall electoral process had suffered major disruptions, including strike action by IT staff demanding several months’ worth of unpaid wages.
These by-elections were intended to bring the major electoral cycle, which began in late 2025, to a definitive close. Specifically, they were to cover:
• 5 constituencies for the second round of the parliamentary elections.
• 3 constituencies for the single-round regional elections.
• 16 constituencies for the local elections.
To date, the National Electoral Authority (ANE) has not announced a new date for these elections, leaving the local electoral process in limbo.
