Parliament: Challenges from Unsuccessful Candidates

(Bangui, June 25, 2026 | LAMINE MEDIA) According to Jean-Pierre Waboé, President of the Constitutional Court (who happens to be Touadéra’s uncle), the court has processed 99 petitions and 85 rebuttal briefs regarding parliamentary election disputes. Following review, several measures were taken: vote recounts in certain localities, the dismissal of petitions deemed inadmissible, and the invalidation of candidacies due to observed irregularities. Nevertheless, challenges are pouring in. In Bimbo 1, supporters of candidate Thierry Landry Mokongouma are contesting his disqualification. They maintain that the results previously announced by the National Elections Authority showed their candidate with a commanding lead. The situation is similar in Bouar 2, where voters are denouncing the disqualification of their preferred candidate, Mathurin Issabe. Some residents say they no longer feel represented following this decision. Likewise in Markounda, voices are being raised to demand recognition of the candidate whom locals believe was chosen at the polls. In the face of these and other criticisms, the Constitutional Court stands by its decisions, reiterating that they are based on an analysis of the filed petitions, the irregularities identified, and verificatons of the election results. However, in accordance with applicable legal provisions, decisions rendered by the Constitutional Court are final and not subject to appeal.
