Migrants deported from the US by Trump arrive in Bangui

(Bangui, 14 June 2026 | LAMINE MÉDIA) Whilst six days ago a US federal judge had blocked, on grounds of irregularity, an initial flight carrying Turkish migrants, expelled from the United States, to Bangui, last Friday, amid a deathly silence, particularly from the official authorities, a plane landed in Bangui carrying the first group of migrants deported from the United States. But this arrival has been met with mixed reactions from the public (who, incidentally, were not consulted on this deal – a common practice in this country); the fact remains that there was unrest and fierce controversy. Amid political criticism, questions from civil society and mixed reactions, the reception was rather controversial. There was a significant security presence at the airport, and then, in the dead of night, the seventeen passengers were taken to hotels in the city centre. And the Central African authorities have provided no official information on their identity, nationality or the exact conditions of their reception, fuelling speculation and, of course, without any national consultation. Several voices are thus severely criticising the government for agreeing to take in these migrants. Others suspect the authorities of having received undisclosed financial compensation.
