Landslide at the Bé-Mbari site (Nana Mambéré)
By Marienne ZINGOUT | LAMINE MEDIA
(Bouar, 12 May 2026 | LAMINE MEDIA) Approximately 250 kilometres from Bouar, in Nana-Mambéré. A serious mining accident occurred on 6 May at the Bé-Mbari site. According to reports, a landslide occurred in the middle of artisanal mining operations, claiming the lives of at least twenty-three people. According to eyewitness accounts gathered at the scene, the victims were working at the bottom of a shaft when the ground suddenly collapsed. Trapped under the rubble, the miners could not be rescued in time despite rescue attempts by local residents and other workers at the site. “All the victims were pulled from the rubble before being handed over to their families for burial,” said a witness. This latest disaster once again highlights the dangers of artisanal mining sites in several regions of the country. This is all the more so given that artisanal mining operations are unregulated and do not comply with minimum safety standards.
