The Blaise Didacien Kossimatchi Case

By Karen Ann SULLIVAN | LNC

(Bangui, July 9, 2026 | LAMINE MÉDIA) Blaise Didacien Kossimatchi is facing charges for actions that might seem trivial from a Western perspective but carry significant weight in Africa: alleged offenses, threats, and insults directed at government members, including Minister Roméo Gribingui. Two civil party claims have been filed in this case: one by Minister Roméo Gribingui and another by government members represented by their legal counsel. He stood trial yesterday, Wednesday, in Bangui. Following the proceedings, the court reserved its judgment and will deliver its decision on July 15. In the meantime, lawyers for the civil parties—led notably by Denis Modemadé—have asked the court to find the defendant liable and order him to pay symbolic damages to the civil parties. As for the defense, lawyers raised a procedural objection, requesting the severance of the claim filed by Minister Roméo Gribingui; they argued that he could not be joined to the proceedings initiated on behalf of the government members. However, the court rejected this request. The defense also challenged the standing of the civil parties, arguing that the complainants had failed to demonstrate sufficient harm to justify their status as civil parties. Ultimately, in its closing arguments, the prosecution requested a one-year suspended prison sentence, the removal of the incriminating videos, and a fine of 400,000 CFA francs payable to the Public Treasury. The final verdict is expected on July 15.
