Diesel Shortage in Bangui

(Bangui, 30 May 2026 | LAMINE MEDIA) For several days now, Bangui has been facing a severe shortage of diesel at the city’s various petrol stations. Naturally, this has caused significant disruption across the city and raised concerns among road users, particularly as there have been no official explanations regarding the causes of this disruption. As a result, we are once again seeing long queues outside the few remaining petrol stations still stocked with diesel, with taxi and bus drivers and private motorists waiting for hours on end in the hope of obtaining fuel, whilst many stations already have empty tanks. Incidentally, to stem this shortage, some petrol stations have introduced sales quotas per vehicle; however, this measure complicates economic activity. As at the PK3 petrol station, where Pablo, a road user, expresses his dismay: “We’re here for fuel, but we’re told there isn’t enough. That’s why we’re queuing, but the situation is difficult. The managers are rationing sales by limiting purchases to between 15,000 and 20,000 CFA francs per vehicle. Yet a car like mine uses nearly 90 litres. This quota is insufficient to carry out our daily activities.” Faced with supply difficulties, consumers are urging the Ministry of Energy Development and Water Resources to take swift action to stabilise the distribution chain. Take Guy Parfait Mekoubo, a resident of Bangui, who is sounding the alarm after a day of fruitless searching: “Since this morning, we have been round to several petrol stations, but it is impossible to find diesel. We urge the government to find a sustainable solution to enable us to continue our journeys and daily activities.” But no response has come from the authorities, not even a lie from Balalou. Consequently, the people of Bangui continue to adapt as best they can to this energy crisis.
