Bangui: Fuel Shortage
By Lingyun SUWAN | LNC
(Bangui, July 13, 2026 | LAMINE MÉDIA) For nearly a week now, long queues have returned to Bangui's service stations. This situation is disrupting economic life and residents' travel, while the price of gasoline is rising on the black market. From the early hours of the morning, dozens of motorists and motorcycle taxi drivers can be seen crowding outside service stations in search of fuel. "We arrived very early, but waited several hours before being served. Many people are filling up jerrycans to resell the fuel, which slows down distribution," says a motorcycle taxi driver. This situation is a boon for the black market, which is gaining momentum. A liter of gasoline—officially sold at 1,050 CFA francs—is being offered there by resellers for between 1,400 and 1,500 CFA francs. For taxi and motorcycle taxi drivers, this means a drop in daily earnings. Some choose to stop working after waiting for hours, while others pass the increased fuel cost on to passengers in the form of higher fares. Amidst these woes, households and small business owners who rely on transport for their activities are also affected. Officially, no explanation for the shortage has been provided. It is worth noting, however, that this shortage comes just days after Defense and Security Forces seized over 160,000 liters of fuel destined for the black market. Authorities announced that this fuel would be allocated to the Central African Armed Forces (FACA). Is this a cause or an effect?
