Voluntary Return of Central African Exiles in the DRC

By Karen Ann SULLIVAN | LNC

(Bangui, July 15, 2026 | LAMINE MEDIA) Today, following a suspension, the voluntary repatriation of Central African refugees living in the North-Ubangi and South-Ubangi provinces of the DRC has resumed. This decision stems from a tripartite workshop involving the DRC, the CAR, and the UNHCR, held in Kinshasa from June 9 to 11 under the supervision of the Deputy Prime Minister for the Interior, Jacquemin Shabani. It should be noted that these returns are proceeding following the prior consent of the local host communities. The previous suspension had been ordered at the request of Central African authorities in December 2025 due to security concerns. Following an assessment of security conditions on the ground, the process has been reactivated to allow for the dignified return of thousands of prospective returnees; the UNHCR estimates that more than 200,000 Central African refugees remain in the DRC. It should be clarified that the voluntary repatriation of Central African refugees from the DRC to the CAR has not yet formally resumed as of today. It has been agreed upon and scheduled for the second half of July 2026, following a tripartite agreement (DRC, CAR, and UNHCR) reached in Kinshasa.
