Death of Quintuplets
By Mathias | LA NOUVELLE CENTRAFRIQUE (LNC)
(Bangui, August 23, 2026 | LAMINE MÉDIA) Quintuplets from Bogangolo (in the Boban area) died following their transfer to Bangui for specialized care—an event that has understandably sparked strong public emotion. In the wake of this tragedy, the civil society group I_GWÉ is demanding explanations from the Ministry of Health, as well as the opening of an investigation. The five newborns were delivered on August 11, 2026, and were scheduled for transfer to the Bangui Pediatric Complex. In an open letter to the Minister of Health, the organization points to concerning ambiguities regarding the protocols for newborn care and, more broadly, the functioning of the medical evacuation system between the provinces and the capital. Consequently, I_GWÉ is calling for an official statement regarding the exact circumstances of the five infants' deaths. They are also requesting details on the transfer timeline, the care administered upon arrival in Bangui, and any medical, logistical, or administrative difficulties encountered during their treatment. It should be noted that the last surviving infant succumbed to acute respiratory distress. Due to extreme prematurity, the newborns' lungs were not fully developed. Despite the tireless efforts of the medical staff in Bangui, the hospital lacked the necessary high-tech incubators and continuous respiratory support systems required for such low birth weights. Medical staff noted that the quintuplets were born far from the capital, and the conditions of their initial road transfer from Bogangolo to Bangui placed a severe strain on their already fragile physical resilience. In addition to calling for an independent investigation, I_GWÉ seeks to have those responsible for this tragedy identified and preventive measures implemented to avoid such accidents in the future, thereby establishing the facts and determining any liability. It also calls for appropriate action to be taken against the identified parties, where applicable. The open letter was signed in Bangui on August 17, 2026, by Quentin Claver Ngbouando, Coordinator of the I_GWÉ platform.
