Cholera Outbreak

By Susan CARTER-JONES | LNC

(Bangui, July 13, 2026 | LAMINE MEDIA) The Ministry of Health reports that a cholera epidemic has firmly taken hold in the country and is wreaking havoc; 450 cases and around twenty deaths have already been recorded. The impact is particularly severe in the Bimbo and Mbaïki health districts, and more broadly across the southwest, where the main hotspots are located. Along with the AIDS epidemic—which receives little attention—this is one of the scourges currently afflicting the nation. According to UNICEF, cholera is a treatable disease for which a vaccine exists. However, medical measures alone are insufficient; eradicating cholera requires tackling the poverty, unsanitary conditions, and food crises that leave the most vulnerable populations at risk. Socio-economic status, living conditions, high population density, and poor hygiene are all factors that fuel the emergence and spread of cholera outbreaks. Given the prevalence of unsanitary conditions, stagnant water, and food crises in the Central African Republic, the environment is unfortunately ripe for the disease to thrive.
