Cholera Outbreak in the Central African Republic
By Michal MAMADOU | LNC Translated into English by Gwenaelle DE LACAN
(Bangui, June 28, 2026 | LAMINE MEDIA) With 197 recorded cases and 24 deaths in the Bimbo and Mbaïki districts, Central African authorities have officially declared a cholera outbreak. Health measures have been implemented to contain the spread of the infection, with additional steps being rolled out in surrounding towns to prevent the disease from spreading further. It is worth noting that cholera—often called the "disease of the poor"—is transmitted through water and food contaminated by bacteria and can cause dehydration and diarrhea. Modern wastewater treatment has virtually eradicated the disease in most wealthy nations; however, in the Central African Republic—one of the world's poorest countries—the risk remains. This marks the fifth outbreak the country has experienced. During the last outbreak, declared in 2016, 522 cases and 23 deaths were recorded. Awareness campaigns have already been launched across the country.
