Cross-border meeting on Ebola risks

(Bangui, August 21, 2026 | LAMINE MEDIA) Last Thursday, Pierre Somsé, Minister of Health, was at Bangui-M’Poko Airport to welcome delegations from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, and Uganda. They had arrived to participate in a cross-border consultative meeting regarding health risks associated with Ebola virus disease. Over the course of two days, representatives from the five participating countries are set to share information on the epidemiological situation in their respective regions, analyze cross-border health risks, and strengthen coordination among various national surveillance and response mechanisms. The meeting aims to identify key border areas considered to be at risk and to define joint measures to improve prevention and response regarding potential health emergencies. For Mohamed Yakoub Janabi, the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, this visit takes place against a backdrop of significant health challenges, necessitating the strengthening of national and regional capacities for prevention, preparedness, and response to public health emergencies. It is worth noting that this is Mohamed Yakoub Janabi’s second visit to the Central African Republic since the start of his tenure leading the WHO Regional Office for Africa. This productive meeting serves as a forum for exchange among the five countries, aiming to bolster cooperation and define coordinated responses to the risk of Ebola virus disease spreading, particularly in cross-border areas.
