Kwibohora 32
By Sophie HERVOUET | LNC Translated tnto English by Gwenaëlle DE LACAN
(Bangui, July 7, 2026 | LAMINE MÉDIA) On Saturday, July 4, 2026—much like the USA—Rwanda celebrated Kwibohora 32. Kwibohora means "Liberation," and the number 32 signifies the 32nd anniversary; it is a day to commemorate the end of the genocide perpetrated against the Tutsi in 1994. The Rwandan Embassy in the Central African Republic organized a ceremony attended by Faustin Touadéra. Olivier Kayumba, Rwanda’s ambassador to the CAR, hailed the friendship between Kigali and Bangui and heaped praise on Touadéra regarding his inauguration and the establishment of new Central African institutions—the fruits of the 2025 and 2026 general elections. According to him, these milestones usher in a phase of hope and strengthen the framework for cooperation between the two nations. He emphasized that Kwibohora is not merely a commemoration but a mindset. "The generation that liberated Rwanda had a mission to save a nation. Today, our generation bears a different responsibility: to preserve that nation and prepare for the future." Citing Paul Kagame, he stressed Rwanda’s determination never to allow the resurgence of genocidal ideology. In his view, innovation, excellence, and entrepreneurship must now guide Rwandan youth born after the Liberation. He commended the Central African Republic’s commitment to security sector reform while highlighting Rwanda’s role in peacekeeping operations and bilateral partnerships. For her part, the Central African Republic’s top diplomat, Sylvie Baïpo-Temon, spoke at length about the strength of the bond of friendship between the two sister nations. And so on and so forth. Thus, in celebrating Kwibohora 32, Bangui and Kigali renewed a shared commitment: to preserve the legacy of the Liberation, pass on its values to future generations, and build more stable and prosperous nations. It is an African brotherhood that transcends borders, serving as a bulwark against present-day challenges and a source of hope for the future (ceremony brochure). Isn't that wonderful!
