Beach Volleyball in CAR
By Isabella Luisa CAPELLI | LAMINE MEDIA
(Bangui, August 22, 2026 | LAMINE MEDIA) Originally born in the 1920s as a simple pastime on the beaches of Waikiki, Hawaii, and Santa Monica, California, beach volleyball has transformed over the decades. Its official debut at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games shattered the myth that access to the sea was a prerequisite, turning the discipline into a global competitive sport. Proof of this universality is found in the Central African Republic—a completely landlocked nation—which boasts its own federation, presided over by Crescent Beninga. Demonstrating its ambitions, the country sent athletes to compete in the African Championship in Alexandria, Egypt (Group D), with the ultimate goal of securing a historic qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. During the championship, the Central African duo of Sokpomou and Ndode faced off against the heavyweights of Group D before bowing out honorably against Togo in the play-offs. Ultimately, Morocco (men's) and Nigeria (women's) secured the coveted tickets to the Los Angeles 2028 Games. In a stroke of bad luck and a cruel paradox for these elite athletes, the federation had to tackle this continental challenge while grappling with a severe lack of financial resources.
