Bangui a "ghost town" day
By Sophie HERVOUET | LNC
(Bangui, October 12, 2026 | LAMINE MEDIA) A civil society consortium had called for a "ghost town" day in Bangui. The results were mixed: while civil servants and state employees reported to work early this morning, the situation in the education sector was quite different, with many public and private schools keeping their doors closed.
In the city center and the capital's major markets, business is proceeding sluggishly, with fewer people around than on previous days.
Many bars and restaurants are also closed—contrary to the norm—though a few remain open.
In working-class neighborhoods such as KM5, Ouango, Bimbo, and Combattant, some motorcycle taxi drivers are still operating, though some complain of a lack of customers. Meanwhile, a significant security force presence is visible at key locations across the city. Ultimately, it appears that government directives to go about daily business as usual have gone unheeded.
