Albert's Column...

There's something that has always amazed me about this country: the lack of a national sports championship. You'll never see matches like AS Bangui vs. US Bouar; everything happens in Bangui, the main city. In fact, the national and international teams are all just teams and athletes from Bangui. Those in charge must be somewhat aware of this, since we're now talking about the Bangui league, Grimari, and so on. The truth is, in this country, there have never been truly national or international teams, only teams and athletes from Bangui. And there are reasons for this. First, there's the deplorable state of the roads; you can't transport athletes on such barely passable roads. Added to this are the roadblocks, both legal and illegal, especially illegal, that are springing up everywhere. As for the plane, forget about it; the country doesn't own any. And there's a very simple reason: it's not something people think about. Everything happens in Bangui, and that's just fine. Besides, the provinces aren't even electrified. Finally, there's a reason related to the Central African mentality. Unlike in Europe, they don't understand how someone can make a living from sports; it's not considered serious, and the status of athletes is considered insignificant. These are the reasons behind this.
