Aid Workers Attacked in CAR

(Bangui, June 22, 2026 | LAMINE MEDIA) The Central African Republic is a strange country. It survives on 90% foreign aid, which pays for almost everything. It lives on the remnants of the Bokassa era, more than 50 years ago, and in return, out of ingratitude, it attacks the hand that feeds it. It must be said that it is one of the least safe countries in the world, ruled by an autocrat who makes the law as he pleases. It is a country where aid workers are regularly attacked. Go figure. For example, in Haut-Mbomou (Southeast), there have been reports of a surge in attacks against aid workers. In the space of two weeks, at least three attacks have targeted humanitarian teams on the roads around Zémio, further jeopardizing assistance to vulnerable populations. The latest incident occurred on June 13. A team of ten aid workers was intercepted by armed men on the Zémio-Mboki road, between Tamboura and Zébérou, as they were returning from a mission to implement a food security project. This attack came just three days after another attack on the same road, on June 10. A few days earlier, on May 30, five aid workers were robbed on the Zémio-Dembia road as they were returning from a mission on a project to protect against gender-based violence. The assailants made off with work equipment, motorcycle batteries, and several personal belongings. In short, despite a relative lull observed in recent months, the region remains highly volatile, with persistent insecurity. It should be noted that these attacks not only affect the safety of humanitarian personnel but also reduce the ability of organizations to reach communities in distress. Meanwhile, in Bangui, they are appropriating what others have done, and holding speeches and ceremonies.
